Hardening upgrades, ranked by protection per dollar

1. Ember-resistant vents. The cheapest high-impact upgrade. Embers entering attic and crawlspace vents ignite homes from inside, which is how houses burn down hours after the front passes.
2. Gutter guards and debris control. Pine needle litter in mountain gutters is a rooftop fuel bed waiting for a Santa Ana night.
3. Enclosed or boxed eaves. Open eaves trap rising embers against wood, and open-eave construction is common in older cabin stock.
4. Deck surfaces and under-deck screening where decks sit in or near the ember-resistant zone, the default configuration on sloped mountain lots.
5. Class A roofing at replacement time, with attention to keeping edges and penetrations sealed.
6. Dual-pane, tempered-glass windows on exposures facing continuous fuel.
